Biotin 5000 vs 10000 mcg: how the doses compare

Both are very high compared with dietary needs. Here is what the numbers mean and why more isn’t automatically better.

Guide · Updated 28 Sep 2026

The short answer

Adults need about 30 mcg of biotin a day from food. Both 5000 and 10000 mcg are far above that. There’s no strong evidence 10000 mcg works better than 5000 mcg for hair, skin or nails in people without a deficiency, and higher doses make lab-test interference more likely.

The numbers in context

AmountMultiple of daily intake*
Adequate intake (adults)30 mcg1×
Typical multivitamin30–300 mcg1–10×
Biotin 50005000 mcg~167×
Biotin 1000010000 mcg~333×

*Adequate Intake for adults, as set by US and Australian/New Zealand nutrient reference values.

What biotin does

Biotin is a B vitamin that helps enzymes turn food into energy and supports the normal keratin structure of hair and nails. Deficiency is uncommon, but it shows up as thinning hair and brittle nails, which is why biotin is a staple of beauty formulas.

Is 10000 mcg better?

For most people, not in any way that has been clearly shown. Biotin is water-soluble and excess is excreted. The practical differences between the two doses are cost and a greater chance of interfering with blood tests.

Choosing a formula

Biotin works alongside other nutrients such as zinc and selenium. Glow Maxx pairs 5000 mcg of biotin with zinc, selenium, rosemary leaf and hyaluronic acid in one daily capsule.

In Australia

Biotin products are listed medicines regulated by the TGA. Check the ARTG number and label directions.

In the US

Biotin is a dietary supplement ingredient. There is no established upper limit, but the FDA warns about lab-test interference.

Questions, answered

Is 5000 mcg of biotin too much?
It’s well above dietary needs but is a common supplement dose. Follow the label and tell your doctor before blood tests.
Can I take biotin with collagen?
Yes. They’re different nutrients and are commonly taken together.
Will biotin make my hair grow faster?
Biotin supports normal hair in people who aren’t getting enough. Results vary, and many people take it for 4 to 6 weeks or more before judging.
